I made a website and another person said they could tell what my ip was because of how I uplodaed my pages and photos, how is that possible? They said if I had used proxy servers they could never tell anything about my ip or any other identifying info about the site. Thanks.

You can use a "gateway" such as a Wingate or a proxy server to go through another system that will allow you to keep your IP unknown to the place you are connecting.

You can also "spoof" your IP with certain protocols by changing the packet.

You can also set up your system to block ping requests, also to ping someone you need to know their IP or hostname. Ping does not necessarily have to return the correct IP.

That's not nonsense, you know what nonsense is? Ignorance is nonsense.

Then you don't know much about the internet.....

Thanks for the reply, but I am asking something different, what I am asking is how can someone tell where you are located and what your ip is by you having uploaded pages and pics to a website?

I didn't think that was possible?

well someone can tell that only by viewing ur FTP ogs.. provided that u r using FTP to upload files..and IP adress can be queried againts the RIPE database to find the country, city and even ISP which was used by the person to upload webpages, images, etc etc etc

There are numerous ways one can acquire your IP.
When you connect to anything on the web your IP is used, may it be the HTTP protocol or the FTP protocol.

If you are using ASP with VBScript you can request the IP of the person that requested the website from your server like this: request.servervariables("REMOTE_ADDR")

You can do a trace route on an IP to see where your ISP hub (where your IP is assigned to you) that you connect to is located. It is usually in the same city where you live so that's how they can tell your location.

personally i really don't see why your stressing about something that really doesn't matter. Just have a well secured server and and firewall and you have nothing to worry about.
