Is there a way to set the DB so that all users receive email notification when anyone posts in any/all forums?

Messages in my client's private forum are only posted about 5-10 times per year, so we are confident members won't be upset about receiving emails when someone posts something.

Is there some way to set this in the database without digging into the code?

Many thanks
Gary

Members would need to subscribe themselves to receiving such emails as this is a legal requirement in most countries/states.

Thanks for your quick reply Bruce.

So are you saying theres no tickboxes anywhere that we can switch, to make all members receive email notification for all posts?

We were hoping to switch it on, and then let them opt-out in future if they wanted to.  We have similar anti-spam laws here in NZ but I thought as long as they are registered members and we offer an opt-out link we were ok.

If I can find the db field to turn them all on, presumably that will only hold for existing posts and not new ones, is that right?

cheers
Gary

You maybe right with New Zealand's laws although that would be different to nearly all other countries where you need to have opt-in not opt-out. You should also check with your web host as most require that you have a opt-in policy for bulk email and you may also find that you get blacklisted by anti-spam companies if you start sending unsolicited emails (spam) to people you have opted in to your bulk email.

There is not a field to turn on email notification for members, when a member subscribes to email notifications they are entered in to the EmailNotify table.

In a closed environment (not public) where such laws do not apply at all I can see the validity of this requirement. Indeed, even in a public forum I can imagine subscriptions being automatic as a condition of membership as long as people can opt out. The requirement is not unreasonable to me.

However, from my understanding, WWF creates a record "for each user for each subscription" (be it a topic or a whole forum). Therefore, to solve the problem, either an "all forums" record would have to be programmed in, or many subscription records created for each new user and maintained appropriately for each new post...neither happen today.

So...an alternative might be to use NewsPad to bring attention to new posts (laws apply here too) or simply using MS Word to create an email mailshot using based on the author records in the WWF database.

PS...if we are talking about only a few members you might subscribe them manually to each relevant forum.

If the member selects 'Notify me of replies to posts' in their forum profile then they will be automatically subscribed to all topics they post i, unless they uncheck the 'Email Notify me of Replies' check box when posting.
