Are there any shortcuts or tricks to link to a different thread within your own forum.

I know I can use the hyperlink option when replying, but this assumes it's an external site and opens up a new tab/window.

All links present open up a new window.

Opening local links in the same window has been asked about a few times recently and has been added to the 'todo' list.

I hope it's an option - I prefer a link to open in a new tab for a list of reasons........
(I have my browser settings so that any link I click will default to a new "window", or in modern times, new tab)
I prefer to not lose my place just in case the link takes me to something I'm not interested in afterall.
I simply close the tab and am right back where I was before, no history lost, etc.

Yep, good point - an option in the hyperlink box would be a great idea if it's an external link.
