Topic: Getting VERY SLOW!! Posted: 10 August 2003 at 8:52am |
I have had my forums running for about a year now.
http://www.cubafar.com/forum/
Last week I had to download the DB locally and compact and fixed with access because It was so slow that I got script time out.
I did try to migrate to 7.0 but when I did the database migration the new forum didn’t show any of the static and what was worst it had some crash when I try to insert new post. A reference problem I guess. Any way the migration couldn’t happen.
Now I’m still running 6.34 and I’m not getting script time out after I did compact the DB but is still very slow. Anybody could help me to fix this problem?
Thanks in advance.

No, it does not look like a large Access DB problem - Judging by the number of Threads, Posts and Members it is several times smaller than mine which runs perfectly well at a shade over 10Mb. To me, it looks like a server problem (since the site itself is slow to load) that may just require a simple reboot so have a word with your Host.
Concerning the migration, you MUST perform a compact/repair on the old 6.34 AND the empty new v7 BEFORE running the migrator. After migration perform another compact/repair on the newly populated v7 DB. The stats will require resychronising which Borg has provided using the Admin facility once installed.

Please repair and compact your data base. If you want to upgrade to 7.1 do the same befor conversion and after.
You can find the "Re-sync Topic and Post Count" function in the administration page.
Good luck!

10 mb is considered large for access. Access can be depended on until it reaches about 7 mb, and then it gets unreliable, and gets slow or crashes a lot.

As I said, not on my site - No crashes whatsoever and still as fast as ever, with regular compaction of course. If the design is good and the DB properly maintained, there is no reason why it should suddenly fail above 7MB. Proof is mine hasn't.

It's not going to suddenly fail, but it will require more and more maintenance and perform poorer and poorer until the performance is no longer acceptible.

I have an access database running the version 7 of the forum and never have any trouble with it, not even speed issues.
What size is the database I hear you ask?
89.2mb!
Never been compacted other than the switch from 6.4
