    Posted: 25 September 2003 at 12:22am

I've looked for an option in the admin area, but can't seem to see anything to fix this small issue. A user edited their post substantially after people have replied. Then it looks like the responses have nothing to do with the original authors post. In another case, because a user could not actually delete his post because there were responses, they just deleted all the text in the message, leaving a blank message (except for the "edited by" message and their signature).

Is there any way to prevent users from editing their posts after a response has been posted, aside from removing the edit option altogether? I realize users can quote the original, but most users do not (and that is not a very elegant work around).

If there is no solution for 7.01 (Access version), is this addressed in 7.5?

Thanks for any assistance.

On version 7.01 and 7.05 users can't edit or delete post after they've been replied to, I think it's the same on 7.0 but I'm not sure, I know it was like that with the first beta...

Users can edit posts after they've been replied to, that is the problem, or maybe it's related somehow to my other problem which I posted on, i.e. Newbies being able to reply to a forum set to Admin Only. If the group somehow has more access than they are supposed to that might include editing after replies. I'll play around with the groups again and see what happens.

Bruce, I think this item would be one thing I would put on my wish list of things to change in the next update. Even on the current version here, 7.5 beta 1, I can edit my original message, and even change the topic to something completely different, even though there are two responses to it. It seems to me that once a discussion gets going on a topic, people shouldn't be able to just mess around by completing rewriting their posts. Having a "no deletion after response" feature becomes more or less redundant since users can just erase all the text in their posts anyway.

It's probably not a big deal most of the time, until certain types of individuals catch on to that little trick. It's already happened with two messages on my forum and it's only been on-line about one month.

Thanks!

[edited some typos]

I've modified forum_posts.asp so it only allows editing of posts if there are no responses and if you're not the admin or a moderator.

If anyone is interested, this is what I modified:

Line 756 (or just below the comment "Only let the user edit the post if they have edit rights")
Change: If blnEdit OR blnAdmin Then...
To: If (intTotalNumOfThreads=intThreadNo OR (blnAdmin OR blnModerator)) AND blnEdit Then...

My tests indicate this works as intended. If someone finds that it doesn't please let me know.

Thanks very much.

(I don't know if this qualifies as a mod or not, so hopefully it isn't deemed to be in the wrong forum.)

[Edit - removed a redundant "or blnAdmin" from the change line.]

Ops, you do can edit the post, I thought it had been said before that it can only be edited before someone replies to it, I didn't noticed until now that I can edit all my posts here
