    Posted: 05 March 2003 at 12:48pm

hello all, i did a very stupid thing recently. i am using this message board on my web site and have a couple sub-webs also. the folder that i store my board in is a regular folder, not a sub, but recently while monkeying around in my files i decided to convert it to a sub web.

in front page, in the folder list, i right clicked the folder and selected "convert to web" (ignoring the warnings that i might get hosed). needless to say i am hosed. i converted it back to a regular folder but still no luck, i reimported all the files that comprise the board except the database and still no luck.

here is the error message i recieve when i try to go to the URL for my board:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Operation must use an updateable query.

/forum/active_users.inc, line 172

does anyone know what i need to do to fix this? please any help is appreciated, this is a family message board for a military web site and i need some advice badly.

thanks

You need to reset permission. I am sure frontpage, when converting it to a web, set the permissions default which does not include write access. Even when going back it did not change it back to write access. Change the folder where your db is in to have write access.

ok, that makes sense, now my next question would be, if i change the folder, then none of the script will be pointing in the right location of the db, so where do i locate the script that tells the server where to find the database?

or can i just move it and then put it back and fix the problem?

thanks for helping  =o)

Does your server have FP extensions installed? if  so, then FP is controlling the read/write settings

By default, FrontPage only grants read access to files on the site. Therefore, any updates on databases will not work.

[RESOLUTION]

If FrontPage extensions are installed:

1. Use the "Import" feature in FrontPage to import the databases, and let FrontPage make the database connection. This will put the databases in the /fpdb directory, and it will automatically assign it read and write permissions. Of course, you would have to edit any DSNs (if used) and the necessary WebWiz files to reflect the new path of the databases. This is the recommended course of action. It works every time.

If the database already exists on the site, it needs to be "recognized" by FrontPage. First, open the web in FrontPage. Then, under Tools, Web Settings, Database tab, add a new database connection for the database.  Again, the problems seem to arise from FP extensions being installed on the server.  FP can be a real pain sometimes.

Don't know if this will apply to you or not..

Take care,

  David
