Hello all, stumbled across this forum completely by accident but it seems to be an excellent place to throw a couple of questions

I've set myself a little project at work - I want to create a database of a few thousand rows (perhaps one or two tables) but want a web data entry method, eg, somebody could login (does not need to be really secure) bring back a list of records related to that person and for them to be able to complete one or more fields for each record (and commit).  I thought this would be easy LOL..the truth is, I've no idea where to START!  I've tried to read a little about ASP (how i ended up here) and even XML and PHP but I do not understand the differences between these (and what the blazes is asp.net?) and whether any of them are suitable for my project mentioned above?

I know thats more than one question - but I cannot seem to pin down a simple answer no matter how many web articles i read - how all these technologies and programmes work together is too puzzling! So any help with my project (a starting suggestion perhaps?) or explanation of the rest would be GREATLY appreciated

and seen as im here..tho probably in the wrong thread- i think i may see if i can install webwiz and try a forum at the same time (just for a dynamic way of presenting information) so that better be easy too

regards

Squeaks

Firstly if you are very new to ASP then you should start at the beginning and go slowly. First learn to connect to the database, before you start thinking about writing a complex program

There are a whole bunch of asp tutorials on this very site. If you look under the ASP section you will see how to connect to a database.

Also there is an example of a login which you can follow as well.

so, is ASP the way to go for this type of simple database form?

would it be possible to perhaps use the maddog portal and then include any created database forms into a page?  and by form I mean something that returns a list of data which needs completing - rather than the examples i seem to find which is a form or template SENDING data to a backend only?

If you are just beginning, as I am, I would think you should rather look at going straight to ASP.net rather as it will be the future.. I started on ASP as well, and later found out, that I would in fact be better to go to ASP.NET..  You can learn more at www.asp.net
