I am trying to get a VPN to tunnel through my router. I am using Microsoft PPTP. Which ports do I need to open?

I would use L2TP but I get an error saying:

The connection attempt failed due to failure to encrypt data

Someone help

Thanks in advance

With "VPN" being a somewhat generic term, there are several different protocols
and ports you may have to deal with.

Cisco's GRE tunnels use IP protocol 47. (By comparison, TCP is IP protocol 6 and
UDP is IP protocol 17, so GRE is a "sibling" of the TCP and UDP protocols.)

Microsoft VPN (i.e. PPTP) uses IP protocol 47 (GRE) and TCP port 1723.

IPSec uses IP protocol 50 for ESP, IP protocol 51 for AH, and UDP port 500 for
IKE.

Novell Borderware VPN uses IP protocol 57, TCP ports 213 and 353, and UDP ports
353 and 2010.

Other proprietary VPN solutions can use other combinations of protocols and
ports, so you may have to dig around a little to find the specifics.

This is good except for one thing. I use a D-Link home router. I can turn on port forwarding for port 47 but I cannot turn on the GRE protocol.  Does anyone have any other ideas?
