Hi

I upgraded my forum from 7.7a to 7.8 using the patch all went well... many thanks. But, I had a quick look at the forum today and find that I have 7 guests!! when I look they were all logged in within a few minutes of one another at 06:30hrs this morning (time now is 12:45hrs) and they are all showing zero active time.

Just had another look and now there is only 4! ... what are Guests?

Do you know what is happening?

Cheers

HTTP is a statless protocol so trying to accuretly keep track of users is a bit of a hit and miss affair.

The forum uses IP addresses to keep track of users that are not logged in, this means that if a spider hits your site, or someone using IP spooofing software they could have mutiple IP addresses, this will then mean that the guest user is shown multiple times in the active users table.

AOL also seems to make multiple connections for the same guest/user. I've seen the same user show up 4 times in the "active users" list when they connect from AOL. I haven't seen it from any other ISP.

For a while, aol was instantiating a new session for each request - so if you had a page with 10 images, it would show as 11 sessions. They changed somethings, but they still instantiate more than one session for a page.

Lead me not into temptation... I know the short cut, follow me.
