We've been running 7.1 for a year with no problems. We recently upgraded to 7.9 and immediately ran into major issues.

1) When logging in after either logging out or switching from one computer to another, the user gets "Access Denied - Only Members with Sufficient Permission......)

2) The same message appears when trying to modify a profile

Everyone got the message, including admins. However, if the user is persistent he can eventually get past that message. It sometimes takes 5 or 6 tries, sometimes MANY more. But eventually you can get past it.

We decided it was causing too much trouble for our members so we reverted to 7.1. BUT - the problem persists. Exactly the same problem.

Is there anything you can think of that would cause this and any ideas for a fix? Thanks much for your time.

Not sure, but I think there was a change to the cookies along the way from 7.1 to 7.9. You might try hitting the link on the bottom of the main page to delete cookies, but I don't know if that will delete everything - new and old.

BTW. Love TweakXP. One of my regular ports of call before doing upgrades/installs.

Om my mobile development notebook, I ran into the same exact problems, I rooted the problem to be related to one or both of these things:

  1. Not using pass encryption, by setting the var in common.asp then manually changing the DB to a clear text pass.
  2. Not using application variables, again by changing the var in common.asp.

Have you changed any on these?

dpyers - Thanks for the compliment . As for the problem here, it's not a cookie thing, but thanks.

It does sound like a cookie issue.

Check your site is correctly setting and reading back in cookies.

Also check your permisisons.

If you login on one machine you will automactiocally be logged off on the second so you will need to relog back in when you switch back to the second machine.

Corrupted files can also course problems try reuploading files.

IE does have an index cookie corruption bug that Microsoft may one ady address, till then try another browser as see if that has the same problems, at least then you can norrow down the problem.

Thanks boRg.

It happens on all browsers and to all users. We do know about the need to relog in after changing systems (I found that out the hard way).

The easiest way for you to see what happens is to register on our site and then log off and try to log back on. More often than not you will not be able to without great difficulty. You can delete your cookies and try again, but it makes no difference.

Again, everything worked fine until we upgraded to the new version, and the problem remains even after rolling back. And as I mentioned before, it also happens when users (or admins) try to update a user's profile.

The other day we switched servers to see if it might be a hw issue. Everything worked fine, so I logged off, cleared TIF and cookies and it took me a half hour before I could log back on - kept getting the "Access Denied" message. Eventually the system did allow me to log on.

Do you have access to the server logs? Might check for application resets and possibly db connections being dropped.

I've been to your site and registered and was able to login and log out over 20 times now without any problems.

I also viewed quite a number of profiles although I see you must have modified the code as it changed the forum page when viewing the profiles, but I had no access denied message.

I also updated profiles and was able to move around the forum without any problems.

I used Mozilla Firebird for this test.

Also, you should upgrade your forum IMMEDIATLY, otherwise your forum is open to hackers. A large number of unpatched installations have been completly wiped by hackers recently loosing all posts etc.
