In Classic ASP, how do you set the random seed?

The command - Randomize - before generating the random number gnerates the seed based upon clock ticks.

If you do need to generate your own seed instead of using the system one, ISTR seeing random.seed = X being used somewhere. X would probably need to be the same data type that's used for raw time inumbers.

Thanks for that, I will try it out.

I'm doing an experiment:

http://www.drum-world.com/crumpets.asp

It's just an infinate series of fake articles that all link to more fake articles.

Only problem is when Google indexes a page, it checks it twice I believe to make sure it's not being tricked.  If I generate the random words based on an ID seed then it will be the same each time.

If Google/MSN indexes thousands of these fake articles, I want to see if it brings in any visitors at all as a test.

I also want to use real words but I can't seem to figure out how.

If I were you, I'd set up a different domain for testing it out. You've got to much to loose if it hoses and they blacklist you.

There's random word pickers out there that are dictionary based. Seen them for crossword puzzle generators - and spam of course - lol.

Google gives prefence for certain words found in contect or proximity to each other - e.g. God and Bless, perhaps within 10 words of Queen. You might get better results if you picked the random words from long articles on a specific topic - e.g. drumming.

I've just set up http://www.poker-devils.com to the test, as it's currently an unused domain I have.

The article system has correct punctuation and a good layout, and also uses the article ID as the seed so that the articles don't change their content at any point.  It can have a maximum of 10 million articles in it.

I'm going to try and develop it as much as I can to see how sucessful I can get it, what you've told me about the word associations is interesting but probably very difficult to implement.

I'm still looking for a text file dictionary, if you know of any (without definitions included, just CSV words) please let me know!

Doing the words for context or proximity would be hard, that 's why I recommeended using an article for the source - better chance of getting words that shoulf be together.

Text dictionary at http://www.orchy.com/dictionary/index.html
Think it's US spelling though.

Thanks for the dictionary, and the idea about getting words from articles.

I'll use the dictionary now, and then when I finish that I will try out the article idea.
