Hello,
I would like to host SQL-based forum somewhere... In this case I need:

1) use MSDE DB instead of SQL one to avoid extra payments for SQL. Is it easy way? I have to just detach/attach DB? Are there any limitations for forum/extra settings necessity?

2) could you please recommend me good hosting with MSDE or cheap SQL support? I looked at http://www.webwiz.net/web_hosting.asp but can't find MSDE or SQL option

One more question about hosting... It interesting to use my own visrtual server under MS Visrtual Server - are there companies which allow upload my own machine (*.vhd) and use it?

Thank you

MSDE is a developer version. It is throttled back and is not suitable for public web sites - just for testing.

If cost is an issue, use the MySQL version instead of the MSSQL version.

Thank you. According to MS MSDE may be used for large forum, because enterprise features missed only...
May we just copy DB from SQL to MSDE?

2Mikey Thank you. So, may I just copy DB from SQL server to another box with MSDE installed only?

What about web hosting with MSDE supported? Smile Or cheap full SQL support
Thank you for prompt reply!

I'm not really hot on SQL stuffs but many of the other users on this forum are.

If your webhost uses a cut down version of SQL then they're just being cheap

Have a look at

MSDE is not the developer version of MSSQL 2005 referred to in your link. MSDE stands for Miscrosoft SQL Desktop Edition. It is based upon mssql 2000 and is throttled for 5 concurrent users.

MSSQL 2005 Developer Edition uses a local file. You cannot use that file on most shared web hosts as it requires an instance of MSSQL 2005. Most shared web hosts restrict MSSQL DB's of any version to separate servers that are tuned for db performance.

Thanks! But it seems they have no MSDE/SQL options listed...
And their contact doesn't work :-(
