Hi,
Can anyone assist please?

Our users are unable to create a new topic but replies seem to work ok.

The error is:

Server Error in Forum Application
An error has occurred while writing to the database.
Please contact the Forum Administrator.

Support Error Code:- err_SQLServer_save_new_topic_data
File Name:- new_post.asp
Forum Version:- 11.04

Error details:-
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'dbo.tblTopic' with unique index 'Start_Thread_ID'. The duplicate key value is (0).

I have updated the forum files but this doesn't appear to have fixed anything.

Prior to the error no updates or migrations had taken place, it just suddenly stopped working.

Thanks in advance.

Your database is corrupted.

Open the database table 'dbo.tblTopic' and locate the column 'Start_Thread_ID'. Once topic will have 0 in the 'Start_Thread_ID'. This topic needs to be deleted from the database.

It has happened again, exact same error and exact same fix. Is there something that's causing this I can take a look at?

Hi,
Is there a way of permanently fixing this? It seems to break with the exact same error I would say about once a month.

Doing as you say and removing the ID=0 entry fixes the forum again.

I was wondering if there was some sort of repair utility I could try? Or is a primary key or something wrong somewhere?

This error is extremely rare and would only occur if the file to process a new post does not complete.

If you are getting this error often then I would advise to look at issues on your server to determine why the process to save the post is not completing.

It could be a stability issue on the server causing the server or app pool to crash or that the app pool is not recycling correctly and not allowing any threads to complete before the old app pool process is shut down.

It is hosted with yourself so shall I just log a ticket?

I have another forum with you too and that one is fine.

Yes, you should open a support ticket so that we can investigate the issue.
