Hi all. I have a very old version of this forum and i have just downloaded the latest version. I was going to backup the existing database before i upgraded.

When i was in the process of doing this i noticed the database was 15GB in size. My forum has a little over 10k total posts... Is this a normal size for this amount of posts?  My provider only gives me 10GB for the database so it looks like i'm way over that limit now and there is no space to backup my database. I would have thought SQL would be a little more efficient?

That does seem overly larger, as we host forums with over a million posts that are only 1 GB in size. With 10,000 posts your database should be well under 100 MB in size.

Make sure that the database is set to use Simple Recover Mode and try shrinking the database to bring the size down.

Hi again. now the reason i was wanting to upgrade my forum to the latest version is because the mobile view only shows half of the screen. The problem i have is i can not remember the password i used to create the database as it was like 10 years ago. So i cant upgrade to the latest version without starting over.

So my new question is this. can i just copy the modified files that were changed and replace the old files with the new updated mobile version? I have looked at the upgrade notes and it looks like there are only 3 or 4 files changed and the code looks almost identical to my old files.

Sorry upgrading a 10 year old version of Web Wiz Forums by just copying over files would not work as there are many linked changes over that time.

There are also improvements to features, performance and security improvements that mean its important to make sure you are always running the latest version, especially with a web application that is connected to the public internet.

As a hosting provider we see websites that get hacked all the time and used for malicious activity such as phishing and spamming due to the website owners not updating the applications they have running on their websites.

If you are using SQL Server you can always change the password for your SQL Server database user, or create a second user for the database and use the new user when upgrading. The new user will need to have DataBase Owner (DBO) rights over the database.
