    Posted: 06 May 2008 at 9:47am
Hi,

I'm running a full version 9.06 installation embedded in a web site where I authenticate users against my own database. I have WebWiz set up to accept the 'local' authentication from my own database.

Everything works well at first - I have 'administrator/letmein' in my own database, so when I log in and then go to the forum I am logged in and see the 'Admin' link. When I click on the 'Admin' link and log into the admin area that works too.

When I then update the admin account to 'administrator/mypassword' I get a success message confirming the update. Going back to my own database, I then amend the 'administrator' password from 'letmein' to 'mypassword' and then log in again.

I log in successfully, I can see the 'Admin' link but when I click on it and attempt to log into the forum admin area with 'administrator/mypassword' I get a message saying that the username or password is invalid in spite of the success message I received when I changed it.

I really need some help right now - this forum is running on a commercial web site and the only way I seem to be able to admin the forum is with the 'letmein' password. Vcan anyone please help me - I'm desperate!!!

Regards

I found description about password reset, somewhere on this site, but I can't remember where...

Here is a copy I have, just in case... Wink

Admin Account Password Reset

Occasionally Web Wiz Forums owners forget login details to their Admin Account and therefore can not login to administrator Web Wiz Forums.

The problem is that passwords are 106bit one way encrypted for security reasons so hackers can not get hold of your password. This means passwords can not be recovered, however, before you completely panic there are some options available to you to reset your admin passwords.

The simplest way, if you have set an email address for the Admin Account and have the email features of Web Wiz Forums correctly setup and enabled, is to use the Forgotten Password page from the login page to request a new password be sent to the email address entered for the admin account.

If you are unable to request a new password by email then the last option is to manually reset the password in the database following the steps below:-

Open the database in a database management tool
Open the database table 'tblAuthor'
Find record with the 'Author_ID' with the value of '1', this is your Admin Account record
Copy and paste the following to the 'Username' field:-
administrator

Copy and paste the following to the 'Password' field:-
A85B3E67CFA695D711570FB9822C0CF82871903B

Copy and paste the following to the 'Salt' field:-
72964E7

Your Web Wiz Forums Admin Account username and password should now be reset to:-
Username: administrator
Password: letmein

Thank you. I'm aware of that post - my problem isn't that I can't reset the admin password, but rather that the forum doesn't appear to updating it correctly.

When you use the existing member API it is best to leave the built in admin account as a forum only account and not associate it with a login from your own database. Then use this account purely for logging into the Admin Control Panel by going directly to the 'admin.asp' login page.

If you want to you can always place another member account that is associated with a login from your own system into the admin group.

Thanks for that suggestion - I'd adopt it now, BUT - I'm in even deeper trouble.

Having decided to make a clean start I deleted the administrator account - can you tell me what's supposed to go in the (required) User_code field?

I must say that the system appears to be absolutely secure - I can't see it being compromised any time soon ;0)

Oh no, this could mean big problems. You should NEVER delete the built in Admin and Guest accounts as these are hard coded accounts and need to have the correct ID.

The built in Admin account needs to have the Arthor_ID of 1 as this field is set to auto increment you may find it difficult setting the Author_ID to 1

You can place anything you want for the moment into the User_code field as this will be updated when you update your password.

>>You should NEVER delete the built in Admin and Guest accounts<<

That falls into the "too late now" category! As its a new installation and I have about 10 posts, I've solved the problem by using a fresh database - I'm lucky I'm on this learning curve now rather than later on when it's full!

Many thanks for your prompt assistance.

Sorry - I spoke too soon. Having replaced the database I logged in and ran through the configuration list - avatars to 'OFF' etc. On saving the changes I was prompted to upgrade to the Premium Edition.

What do I need to do now, to reinstate the licence or whatever it is that's assuming I haven't paid?

Regards
