    Posted: 13 January 2004 at 8:29pm

I just installed the forums, and when testing it out I keep getting a script error while trying to post a message or reply. The error is;

line: 286
Char: 1
Error: Object expected
Code: 0
Url:..blahblah/forum_posts.asp TID=1&PN=1

This means that the JavaScript file is either corrupted or not working correctly:-

  • Try reuploading the files again.
  • If you are on a free web host the adds they inject will prevent the javascript from running correctly so you should check the install instructions that come with the forum on installing it on free web hosts.
  • If you are trying to instergarte the forum with the rest of your site, it maybe some javascript in your files that are effecting the javascript in the forum files.

 I am sorry I should have put in that I have tried uploading the files again. I also followed the instructions at:

http://www.webwiz.net/web_wiz_forums/docs_free_host_in stall.asp

 Also I tried changing the db driver as is listed in thel comments in the file. I have WYSWYG turned off.

I apologize if this has been answered before but I tried the search function without finding it and have tried everything in the FAQS. I am reloading the entire program onto the site again and am setting it up again.

If you read the final line in the install instructions you are linking to you will find your answer:-

Quote If you are using a free account from 1asphost, domaindlx, or Brinkster then the buttons for the post editor will not work as their add '100mb webspace etc.', is injected into a JavaScript file making the JavaScript within the file fail to run.

Becuase of this there is nothing that can be done to prevent this error, except going for a paid hosting account.

Borg, thank you for your assistance. After I get it set the way I want I will be changing the hosting. I got it to run finally by pushing the db back a couple subdirectories. (I don't know, Maybe it was crossing with other users db's at the Admin/database location even with the file name changed). I am not concerned about the buttons not working for now, and it was never an issue, I kept getting repeated script errors popping up when trying to post at all (not even using the buttons). I just have never dealt with asp before and wanted to play about a bit before switching from my current web host (who does not support it).

You need to download the Lite version of the forum for it to work on free hosts like Brinkster.
