Well, if you mean you thought it was a passing "fad" then I can tell you one reason its not: Money.

I started an account with Google Adsense and placed it on one of my popular sites. It currently makes enough to cover the hosting for several of my sites per month all at zero cost to me except some real estate on my site.

Sometimes it reads as ads by google, other times goooogle. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason to it.

Lead me not into temptation... I know the short cut, follow me.
