Topic: Web hosting - Suitable for WWF ? Posted: 06 February 2006 at 7:41pm |
Hi, can someone tell me if this package would be suitable for purely running WWF please ? I have had good reports on the company, so just need to know if the setup is ok. I hit 65gig Bandwidth this month so want plenty of room. I am also looking to change from WWF Access to SQL. The one I am looking at is the Super planThanks very much.

Looks OK.
Make sure though they support SQL Server.
Also as Access is a flat file desktop database, if you are getting more than just a handful of users on your forum each day you should make the change to SQL ASAP before you end up with a corrupted database.

Thanks Borg. Deffo going to SQL, but at the mo wondering if it would be worth waiting for V8 and doing it all in one bash, although Access somehow coped alright with a couple of hundred people online at the same time. I keep regular backups of my Access DB so hopefully if it becomes corrupt it shouldn't be too much of an issue

This is what it says on their FAQ | Which version of MySql do you have on your servers? |
| We're currently running MySql 3.23 on our servers. |
|
|
| I can see MySql databases listed, but can I have Ms Sql databases instead? |
NetPivotal
doesn't support Ms Sql databases on hosting accounts, but we do give a
minimum of five MySql databases with all our hosting plans.
So I think my best option would be to move hosts and stay with Access. Then when the fully sorted out V8 comes out with MY SQL - Go onto that. Does that sound reasonable ?
Thanks for your help.

Just my $.02 but there's a lot of expertise around about converting access to mssql for V7.9 and not to much expertise for doing it under V8.

mySQL 3.23 is years out of date, the latest version being 5
Version 8 of web wiz forums will support mySQL, but only from mySQL 4.1 or above, not mySQL 3, so the hosting plan you mention would be no good.
The reason why mySQL 4.1 or above is required is becuase Web Wiz Forums requires sub queries, etc. which are only supported from mySQL 4.1 or above.

Thanks for the help chaps. I E-mailed them to ask when they would be updating and got this back:
We have now updated the version of MySql on our newest servers
so if you sign up
for an account now the version will be 4.1.2.
So I assume this would be ok for V8 ?
Dpyers - I know what you are saying mate, but I can't really find any hosts who do MSSQL and the amount of Bandwidth I need for a reasonable price - Looks like I'll have to wait for V8 proper to use MYSQL.........unless anyone knows of a cheap host (Under £25PM) who supports MSSQL and will let me have loads of Bandwidth (>70gig)
Cheers.
