The WWF logon looks good so I'm going to use the WWF logon and user admin as my general website logon.

However I want to make it as easy as possible for people registering for the first time.
So the 'Profile Information' will be removed on first registering as well as 'Forum Preferences'.

What are peoples thoughts on getting a routine to automatically generate a password. This will futher reduce the list of logon fields by 2! The password can then be displayed in the confirmation page and included in the confirmation email.

Am I creating a security hole?

I think people are used to having to select a password. I don't think you do them any favors by making them copy and paste from an email and then change it to what they wanted anyway.

Lead me not into temptation... I know the short cut, follow me.

Having passwords sent to my email i personally think is retarded. Sometimes it has taken over 20 min to receive emails from websites ive registered at to receive my password and by then i moved on to another website that i had access to inless than a minute.

I usually get them in a minute or two but I do a couple of send/receives until I get them. As a user I also find it to be a PITA but as a siteowner, email confirmation eliminates an awful lot of spam posting.

I've done a straw-poll on various friends and family and the results are a little alarming!

When asked for a password a common reaction is that they don't know the password! But you are supposed to make one up I explain, but how will the computer know it is the right one they counter?!?!?!!!Pinch

As I am expecting a fair proportion of my members not to have used a forum before, I'm a little inclined to think that my sample may be a fair representation!

There are a whole plethora of parameters that they can change under settings - changing the password is dwarfed by all the other changes you can do.  In fact I think I have a good idea for a modification. Only expose the ability to change various parameters as they become more experienced!

Reward them with an avatar after say 5 postings - just a thought!

I did say the password would be displayed in the confirmation page. That way they wouldn't have to wait and could log on straight away.

The email would provide a way of refering back to their logon details should they forget them.
