Topic: Advice Needed Posted: 23 October 2006 at 12:32am |

A general topic really. I am currently setting up my own web development company and looking for advice, what to look out for, do's & dont's, what I need, software needed, what i should avoid etc. Would also be interested in peoples thoughts on what will be popular in the future and how i could be one step ahead of the curve!
Any help/advice really would be great.
Thanks.

Remember that you're selling to businesses, not to IT. Long descriptions of the technologies you use, w3c validation, etc., mean nothing to them. Descriptions of how you add functionality and capability to their business will.
You can't compete on price. Figure out another way to attract customers. Doing a site "for experience" or "to build a portfiolio" is a losing proposition.
AJAX and SEO are dominant. One because it adds attractive functionality and the other because everyone want to be in the top 10. Get a handle on Google and their sandbox. You'll need to explain why a site hasn't shown up in Google for 6 months and then why it's on page 50.

A general rule, if you have to ask others how to start a web design company, you have no business to start one.

Nonsense. No one knows everything.

I disagree with MadDog for once.
Amateur may have a great talent for web-design but no business sense. A little help can go a long way

Did I ask how to set one up? NO! I am just
looking for information from those with experience. You can learn alot of
things but experience only comes with time, so that’s why I respect others on
this forum who have experience and may have advice for me.
Thanks to everyone so far for their help.
