Hello WebWiz,

We've got your forum software running here at work and it's good. I want to drive participation up by putting an RSS feed into the other places that staff look (intranet, wiki etc) but I can't at the moment as it isn't working properly.

The RSS feed for the entire forums shows only 1 post from over a year ago. Any forum specific RSS feeds are currently empty (except the one above).

Any ideas? Would you need any more info?

Thanks,

Ralph

RSS Feeds only support public feeds.

This means that they will only include posts in public forums. If your forum is a private forum or you have password protected them then they will not be included in the RSS Feed otherwise you would be making the posts in these private forums public.

Ah, of course, thank you Bruce!

What I did then is give the Guest group read access to the forums (the public can't see it anyway) and the feed works perfectly. Excellent.

Thanks again,

Ralph

Bruce,

In Internet Explorer 8 there is a possibility in the RSS feed property to enter a Username and Password (i.e. the forum credentials). Is it possible for a future release that private forums can be read by using this way?

Thanks,
Robert

Would need to look into this as last time this was looked into about this time last year there was still no standard for password protecting RSS Feeds.

I have done a quick look on this and it appears that the RSS Specification does still not support password protected feeds.

It looks like IE's password feature for RSS Feeds would work with the web servers password protection to log you into the server, rather than logging into the RSS Feed or website.

This means that it still looks like it is not possible to include password protected RSS Feeds. The only way around this would be to make the RSS Feeds in your forum public and then setup password protection in IIS. The down side to this would mean that your users would see a grey password box from the server which would need to be used before they could access your forum.

I will have a more indeth look into this when I get the chance, but at first look it still appears that RSS does not have anything in it's specification for password protected feeds.
