    Posted: 16 September 2010 at 7:22am
Hi All,

I have a need to restrict access to certain forums to certain people.

I am using AD authentication hence I would like to not use passwords to restrict the access.

I think I can use "Non Ladder" groups to do this but I think it would only work if all members of the group required access to the same restricted forums.

What do I do if someone needs to be a member of more than one restricted access groups?

Is there a solution for this?

Or is there way to have a "private forum" and and be able to select only those members who are to have access?

Thanks

As well as setting Group permissions you can also set individual permissions for members using the members permission system in the admin area.

You can then created forums that only certain groups or members can access.

I am interested in this feature as well, i would requiere read/write protection so only members who belong to a certain group or with certain forum access rights can read and write in that forum.

You can already use the Group and Member permissions system to do this.

It's very simple to do.
Example you setup a forum category, or topic called "Secret"
When you have created the membership groups - New Member, Registered Member, Approved or whatever you want to call those groups, then on the forum secret, click hide from groups who cannot access that forum, and then example New Member, take the tick out of Access on that forum itself.

So create forum (example secret)
Hide Forum if no access:
Hide this forum on the boards main page if the user can not access the forum. (put a tick in that box)

Group and Member Tools
Look up the forum called Secret, and untick access where necessary

Dear Burce,

sorry to take this old posting out again.
I have used the hint you had given and it works, however, when i create now a new Forum / Forum Topic, I have to give individual access to every existing registered member. Is there any utility available to automate this?

You should use the Group permissions - it would be far easier
Generally speaking I create the forums first, create the user groups second, and then assign the specific groups access to whichever forums

Or maybe its the other way round
I have had the forums running for a while now myself
Wait for an answer from Bruce on automation though
