    Posted: 21 May 2011 at 10:08am
We are thinking about changing our domain name.

Can we use a .htaccess 301 redirect?

- and will this work:

'redirect 301 /forum/  http://www.newdomain.com/ - http://www.newdomain.com/'

Plz. notice the word forum - and ignore the red - it keeps generating itself!? - I can't get rid of it..

The normal syntax to redirect everything under the root should be:
"redirect 301 / http://www.newdomain.com/"
- but our present forum is in a folder called "forum", like this: "http://www.olddomain.net/forum/"- so I'm wondering if I can do it as suggested in the bold line.

Thanks

Northman,

The support is excellent when you use the "support tickets" I have used them several times and to my delight was sorted within 24 hours, i even had support on a bank holiday monday.

Northman  - You might of got confused with the "Web Wiz Forums" support forum instead of the "Web Wiz Hosting" support forum.

it currently says "Forum Home > Product Support Forums > Web Wiz Forums", meaning the Web Wiz Forum software.

S2H.co.uk - WebWiz Mods and Skins

For support on my mods + skins, please use my forum.

It's best to do such a redirect at IIS level. To redirect to:-

http://forums.webwiz.net$S$Q

The $S$Q on the end will pass across the page name and any querystrings to the new location.

You also need to select 'Redirect all requests to exact destination' and 'Permanent 301' as the Status Code.

If you are hosting with us it is best to create a support ticket giving old and new locations and we can get this setup for you in IIS.

Thank you Bruce..
Yes, we have our hosting and domains with WebWiz.
Would never consider any other way Smile
- I will contact you when it's time.

One question though..
With this method, will we keep our ranks with the search engines?

Thanks tp MrTWS, Paul_T and Scotty for their help.

Yes and no, the 301 redirect is how search engines know that you have permanently moved the page to a new location and will update it's index with the new location.

Although the 301 redirect will pass allot of link juice you would still need to build up the page rank for the new website. From past experience also find that once the pages are re-indexed Google will drop the page rank from the old domain as it does not page rank redirects.

What you will find is that initially you will drop down in the rankings but will usually recover after about 3 months to around 85% of where you were before. To get the rest back is by doing the usually SEO work of getting link backs and now increasingly more getting shared on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.
