Topic: ignore member Posted: 07 October 2013 at 3:04pm |
On any forum one of the problems to manage is there are some members who
have valuable content for some but can be very annoying to other
people. I wish there is an additional choice in the drop down
menu that pops when we click on a member's ID to ignore the member and
makes all his/her posts invisible to the one using the feature. Such a feature would give more control to the members without
publicly divulging anything. I like the "Add to Buddy List" option in that drop down menu and the requested feature would be triggered the same way. " Add to Ignore List" PS: credit to JimT for asking the feature in our forum

This has been suggested before in the past and I believe is on the 'todo' list.

any chance for this to make it to the "done" list anytime in the future? the reason it is an important feature is it unloads a lot of work from the mods' duties: by ignoring a member, one cannot get mad at him/her, does not need to report anything and call for the big guns' action.

This is not a simple feature to add and will require new database schema to support this feature and therefore would need a new major version release in order to add.
It will also likely place extra load on the database requiring extra database calls and more complex database queries.

obviously I was not aware of how difficult that is to implement; thank you so much for taking the time to answer.

This shouldn't require much more work than creating a buddy list, create the ignore list, and load it in for the user. For each message being displayed, compare it to a hash of ignore names, it would only generate one extra DB call, and perhaps 10 hash calls per page to see if a message should be rendered or not. Put a placeholder in there stating the message has been withheld to keep things simple (eg pages with 0 messages after all have been blocked) and so that it is possible to send links to people without worrying your page numbering is different from others.
This type of feature makes moderation much easier because users can simply ignore a user that bothers them and isn't contributing anything useful without trying to convince a moderator that the user is not worth having on the system.
Trolls exist because it's too easy to invoke people into responding, but after one message a user could be ignored forever.

This feature has been requested on our forums for years - some want to ignore annoying members. The problem is that those who SHOULD ignore others often live to read their posts and respond sarcastically, etc.. It would be good if moderators or admin could select the ignore list for some members HA.
