Topic: Points vs Posts & Ladder Groups Posted: 09 October 2013 at 4:36pm |

Hi,
I have just upgraded from 9.50 to 10.16, and, while everything seems to have been very simple and straightforward, I am a bit unsure about the change from 'Posts' to 'Points'
admin_select_members.asp has a column that reads 'Posts', and has a lower number for anyone who has posted since the forum upgrade - I assume this the old method, simply a count of threads by author?
members.asp has a column that reads 'Points', but three is a difference compared to admin_select_members.asp ONLY for members who have posted since the upgrade. Does this mean that there is no conversion of "posts to points" taking place at upgrade time, for any posts made before the upgrade? i.e. If I raised the points for posting from 1 to 10, I would expect the 'Points' column to increase by x10 for all members, but this does not happen.
Finally, I took the opportunity to change my Primary Ladder Group which should have resulted in a number of members moving up to a new group, but this did not happen. Just to confirm, the Ladder group is based on Points, not Posts, and I would expect anyone with a score of >= the number in the "Minimum Number of Points" setting to automatically appear in this new ladder group? Or do they have to make one more post before group membership is recalculated, for example?
Thanks!

Points are different to posts. Members can earn points for contributing to the forum.
In the admin area - there is a page where you can set how many points members get for these actions.
For example the default is 1 point for a post, and 2 for a new thread. I think it was 1 point for a 'thank'.
The admin page is titled "Group Points" under "Group Settings". Changing the points for actions will not result in a change in existing points, they will keep the points they got for when they completed the action. And points for posts members made before the upgrade will be converted at a 1 post = 1 point.
As for the change of primary ladder group - This will not change any existing members, only new members. Existing members will change to the new primary ladder group once they make a post.

Thanks Scotty, that answers my questions!
1) Post coutns are not converted to Points during the upgrade. I assume that this also means that if you change the 'Group Points' options, they will only start to apply for new activities, and will not be recalculated retrospectively.
2) Ladder group changes are only applied after a member makes a new post.

1) Posts counts are converted directly to points count, so if you have 100 Posts after upgrading you would have 100 Points as there is no way to know if the Post counts is for new topics or posts.
If you change how many points members get for activities the new number of points is applied to the new activities.
2) The members ladder group is checked when they make a post and moved to the new ladder group if needed.
