Topic: Emails vs. morality.... Posted: 13 June 2003 at 7:27am |
I have a site on the issues relating to stage. Due to financial restrictions, I had no way out but to go for a targeted/ private publicity. For that reason, I gathered a decent list of those who fall in the category of "theatre" across the globe by surfing through google.
Now, the question that bugs me--is it unethical to send emails to the private domains just for the publicity cause? There are just few who dislike the unwanted notification...many others welcome the news of such a site. What are the general norms of emailing over the Internet?

What you are intending on doing falls under the category of spam.
I have around 300 spam emails a day, many like the one you entened to
send out and personaly they really piss me off as I have to spend at
least 20 minutes a day going through all my mail shifting out all the
spam, which doesn't sound allot but over a year thats quite allot of
time wasted.
Also your web hosts may have an anti spam policy, if so it could mean that one complate gets your web site account terminated.
Sending bulk email like this (spam) can also get your domain
balcklisted and you may have problems sending emails to people in
future.

That means one shall not believe in to the kind of assurances the softawares for mass mailing offer! Like putting an unsubscribe link would pardon one from being a spamer....

The so called 'unsubscribe' link is most often just a way of verifying your address is a valid and active one. By clicking on the link you are openning yourself up to many, many more spam emails.

Spam is classed as unsolisited mail (the person receiving the mail has not asked for it) so having an unsubscribe link doesn't mean it's not spam, 99% of spam has a unsubscribe link on the bottom.

It leaves me a bit scared and numb! Surely, I won't like to be called a spammer anyway. Then, how can one reach to the people of a particular category/ subject if paying to the big search engines isn't possible. Can sharing links/ banners with anonymous sites help in any manner?...

If your site is interesting enough you can be listed on top with search engines like google. If you get enough visits and your site is linked on amy other pages you should have no trouble getting even more traffic.
If you can't manage that your site is just not interesting enough. Sad, but true.
