    Posted: 13 November 2003 at 12:08pm

Hi all

I've come across something in one of my sites that a client is reporting to me.  It seems that when he looks at the homepage of the site I designed for him, some of the text has been turned into a link to a company selling a variety of professional services.

It seems that a spyder/bot (?) has been through the site looking for particular phrases (.eg the words 'professional service') and then converting them into links  -  has anyone else come across this, or can anyone shed any light on what this may be?  It may be that I'm behind the times on this issue.

Damaging for sure, but inventive!  Any advice, knowledge, etc greatly appreciated.

This is most likely a problem on your client's PC, not on the website itself. Have him run a spyware remover program. You can find lots of them at www.download.com.

There are several "adware" type programs that do that.  It is installed on your client's machine.

Have your client download Ad-Aware or some other adware/spyware remover.

ad-aware 6.0 personal edition works fine. However it could be a virus.

yes, a client reported this to me, and he thought I am putting advertisments in his web site... but I discovered that this happens when using Kazaa or iMesh software on the client PC.
