Topic: Uploading pics to blog post via iPad? Posted: 03 June 2012 at 6:03pm |
|
Hi, One of my users is on a cross-continental motorcycle trip and just reported that he is unable to upload photos from his iPad to his blog, although he can make blog posts. I'm waiting for more info on the details of the problem or if he's getting any error codes. I'd like to fix this for him as quickly as possible so I thought I'd throw it out here and see if anyone has any tips, ideas, or suggestions. We're using the latest version 2.01.
Thanks, -Fredo-

Does the iPad support uploads via the browser?
I don't have one so I cannot say for sure. But I am sure I have heard it doesn't or at least didn't in the past.

I don't use any iGadgets so I don't know anything about iPads but will ask my user. Last night he sent me a copy of the error code and it looks as if you may be on to something.
The error says: Microsoft VBscript Runtime error '800a01f4' Variable is undefined: 'strTextDirection' /blog/includes/browser_page_encoding.inc.asp, Line 34
In the file 'browser_page_encoding.inc.asp' Line #34 says: html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="<% = strTextDirection %>" lang="en
Anyway, if this error is related to the users hardware (iPad) then there's nothing that can be done. This is unfortunate as he is a photographer and hoped to include a lot of pics of his journey.
If there's a fix I can implement at the back end to fix this I'd be extremely grateful.

Thanks to Scotty's question I believe we have found a solution. The iPod & Safari browser does not support uploading or downloading from the browser. However there is an alternate browser called iCabMobile that allegedly supports uploading & downloading pictures.
As an additional backup plan I also set up the user with an FTP account which accesses his 'Uploads' folder in the Newspad directory. I directed him to download & install an iPad compatible FTP app and he can ftp the images to the server. Then when adding a photo to a blog post he can just select the file from the list of files already on the server.
I'm pretty sure that one of these solutions should work. If not, I'll report back.
Thanks.

I personally don't use the NewsPad, only the Web Wiz Forum, so I don't know how exactly it works. However they uses the same RTE, so I doubt there are many differences to the posting and uploading.
The error above your user is receiving on his iPad is not related specifically to the iPad. It is a error in the code of the website. It may be that the blog is not set up correctly or has a file that is corrupt (as this has produced similar errors on Web Wiz Forums in the past).
I would suggest based on the error above would be:
- Confirmed you can upload pictures your self on a desktop. And see if you receive this error. - Check that the NewsPad is the latest version, as it could be a bug that was corrected in a newer version - Have you (or anybody else) modified any of the files? E.g. added any modifications to the NewsPad? - If non of the above has worked, You could try uploading the files (if you have a local copy) again to the server in case it is a corrupt file.
Also bare in mind that a mobile device like the iPad is not a full featured browser, though it can do a lot of things such as JavaScripts. There are others (such as uploading) that are not supported, this would include popups. Another example is that mobile device browsers do not support the WYSIWYG editor that is used in NewsPad and Web Wiz Forum.

Safari on the IPhone and IPad do not support uploading and downloading of files.
You would need to use another browser that does support uploading from the browser.
