I recently set up a discussion forum for my website, its only been running less than a week but already attracted over 400 members and the ms access db file is approaching 2MB.

Realistically how far could I go with access before I need to move to SQL, and does it really cost big bucks to have an SQL database?  I've been quoted £30 a month on top of my site fees.

Large Access databases efect all users on the server as the database needs to be opened each time.

Often it depends on your host as to when they believe the database is adversly effecting other users on the server and ask you to move to SQL server. Whay not ask them who large they recommened.

Try US hosts for your site as many throw in SQL server for very little, whereas in the UK for some reason SQL server database cost loads around £25 a month up.

I have had success with www.setupsite.com

Their e-mail is slow at times, but good response & support.  They also support .NET code as well.

I'm sure Google.com will list several sites who support ASP and MS SQL.

VERY IMPORTANT!!  Whatever Host you go with, make sure they allow you to be the DBA of your db.  i.e. your login account is a member of the database's "db_owner" role.

You might find this interesting: http://aerohost.com/SQL-host.htm .

I've been using Webstrike Solutions for 2 years, they've been great. Very fast with support when needed. They support ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, Access or you can get SQL server setup for your domain.

I've moved over to catalyst2, they are incredibly cheap and offer SQL (both MS and My). I'm now trying to figure out what I have to do to convert my forums to SQL, not being very familiar with the latter!

What exactly does this mean, and what if I am not?  You got me worried now!!!   I can create sql and access db's from my control panel, and ive got the sql server address.... what else to I have to checK?
