Just wondering which method people prefer for implementing a shopping basket.

storing the items in the session object.

Or

Storing the items in database.

Guess there are advantages and disadvantes for each. If you store it in a database the users can come back later and pick up (maybe he just got disconnected or something) Putting in a session is less strain on the db thus on the server. Personally I like to put them into the db, this way you can run reports on uncompleted orders, which might reveal a trend. So either or works and I guess also much depends on the type of shopping cart.

thanks for the advice there Michael. If you use a db, do you make them og in before they can put anything in the cart, instead of using the session id as the primary key?

No, don't make them log in, that would aggtevate a lot. Use some ID like Session ID, IP Address or something. Well IP might be bad as some AOL users might get someone elses product added LOL that wouldn't be fun. So I would put the SessionID, place a cookie with that and if they checkout delete that cookie, if they loose connection and come back look for that cookie.
