 Topic: routine microsoft audits

As college students, and under the Academic License Agreement offered by Microsoft, we get to install Microsoft softwares on our personal/home computers for free for non commercial use, and those software works without limitations like trial periods, etc... Among those products are MS Visual Studio .NET, MS SQL Server Enterprise, Windows 2003 Server Enterprise, and much more...
Now I have a dedicated server which I ordered recently, would it be a problem to install any of the above on it for testing and development purposes? During routine microsoft audits, would I get into any trouble for that? I am not going to offer hosting to ms sql other than hosting my own personal sites... Does anyone know?

I don't know the answer to your question... sorry. But your post inspired me to go through with my intended purchase of a new server.
I plan to use a KVM to switch between my main workstation and the new server.
Dell is having a sale on servers and since I've recently joined the Microsoft Partner program and purchased the Action Pack Subscription, I have more operating systems than I know what to do with.

You should be ok if you're just using it for dev. & test purposes. If that's what the license allows... The box doesn't matter. The purpose matters AFAIK.

Yep. You should be good to go. As long as you can prove that the sites you are working on are for academic purposes. A good way to do that is put a link on your site that provides some time of non-private documentation that states it is for academics and a recource they can contact in the event that they have questions. This way your covered if any issues arise. Hope this helps. See ya around.

So how about MSSQL hosting, do I have to setup any DNS records or configure any IP's so I can start hosting my personal MS SQL databases?

That depends on where your MS SQL DB is. If it's on the local server, then you don't need anything. You can just use "local" or 127.0.0.1 (I think). But you can always just use an IP address as well. If you're using a different server, and want to use a domain name, then you do need to have things set up in the DNS servers that are used for your domains. Check the other recent thread for info about that, or check with your host or DNS admin for the specifics. There are many different ways to do DNS, but they are all pretty much similar with only the details changing a little bit. However, I can't give you any details unless I know the system. (e.g. I don't use Plesk and have no idea how you'd do DNS there.)
Quite often your host's support guys will do it for you as DNS requires some technical expertise that most people don't have.
