So, on one of my forums a member (young female, 16 or 17 I think) was absent for a week or so, and came back stating that she had been away because her dad hit her in the eye and fractured her eye socket.

What's my responsibility in this matter?  Shes in the US, and I in the UK.  Should I do something?

I wouldn't. If she says it to you then she can say it to the police. Unless her dad is stupid, he wouldn't do such thing... the US law is no joke when it comes to such thing... Anyways.. It's hard to take everything serious anyone says to you online...

I just don't want to find out one day that something worse happened, I would of hated to of not tried to of stopped it.  I just wanted to know if I am legally obliged also to do anything.

In some, but by no means all states in the US, there are classes of people known as mandated reporters who are obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse. The mandated reporter classes are typically law enforcement, teachers, hospital personnel, etc. In my state, they're about to make clergy mandated reporters.

In most states, the reporting is done to a state childrens services agency who does the investigation and determines what steps need to be taken. I believe that all state child services agencies allow anonymous reports.

Lead me not into temptation... I know the short cut, follow me.
