Interesting article:

http://www.forbes.com/business/2005/05/25/cz_dl_0525linux.html

Guy makes a tool and lets people use it for free, then support gets too expensive, and he decides he can't pay the $500,000 bill by himself - so no more free use for the open source community, that the whole time has been whiny about the tool not being open source. And they start whining again about it not being free.

Gee... That's gratitude for you. His response:

Quote "My response is, 'Let me know when your rent and college tuition are free, when gas and groceries are free, and when your girlfriend decides that you having no money is a great idea. When all that is true I'll get on the bandwagon, too.' Some people don't understand that it costs salaries to develop stuff and support stuff."

Bold highlight is my emphasis - just funny.

Give an inch, they take a mile.

I have been hearing about that for a while. There were quite a few articles on slashdot. Including Linus being insulted by some other development guy. He has had to start his own tool called GIT which has now replaced bitkeeper

And this is how much different from closed source (aka proprietary) groups? I see people all the time whining about MS's licensing schemes, attempt to force upgrades (aka spend more $$), etc.

My response to both groups: if you don't like it then build (code) it yourself. Otherwise, STFU.Wink

I really love the way that McVoy plays it up like BitKeeper is the end-all to code management, blah, blah, blah. I daresay the OSS community will get an app lined out. Just take a look at all the recent (last 18 months) of OSS out there. Who cares if it hiccups kernel development for a bit.
