Hello Friends, I am here with a really serious problem...

The scene is that i am planning to make an Instant Messenger for my website, that uses Web Wiz Forums as the core programe, i mean the members register to the site, they actually register for wwf and further their this registration gives them further options

now the Instant Messanger is HTML (ASP) based, uptilll now it works works fine, there is one little serious problem, that to update the message window, i have to add a small 'Auto Refresher' to the page, that really starts annoying when the message window gets longer. is there any way to write something to a page without Refreshing it ?!? i saw this thing done in wbmsn.net when you log in, you see your whole contact list of MSN Messenger and the page is not refreshed, still it shows you who is online & who is offline, plus when you start a converstaion, i dont know how, but the newest message automatically appears at the bottom of the messenger window without refreshing the page...

Definatly Javascript, but how could this be done ?!?

Plus another small question, is there any way to create such an *exe* file that may load an HTML page in it ?!? is there any programe ?? if yes then which, if no, then what language will help me create such programe that loads an html page in it (Meanz an Inline framed HTML Page, so that we can further navigate)

Please Help, Thankyou.

The only way I know of being able to have a chat program that doesn't do a refresh is through either a java or flash applet that listens on a specific port for incoming messages. Or to write a client-side program that basically does the same thing.

Personally, I wouldn't even try to write an IM program - makes a very large a security hole on the users PC. Good way to loose a lot of friends.

You can use .net or VB to create a client-side exe that has a self contained browser which to can use any way you want.

There's a thread here about some people who integrated Conqueror Chat with there forums.

A decent - fast and small - chat is pipey's flash chat - http://www.pipey.com/chat/

There is no easy way to do this but as dpyers said making a client side app with an integrated browser would be the easiest way forward. Every time ive had to make anything client side ive used Ibasic from http://www.pyxia.com/ they have a demo version on there site plus everything you design is yours no restrictions.

The more you try, the more questions you have. Bumps on a log ask no questions.
