    Posted: 08 March 2011 at 1:37pm
Hi, I'd like some advice on allowing certain members to upload images to the forum please.

Currently, we only allow administrators to upload directly to the site, everyone else uses whatever they use, photobucket etc.

I'd like to introduce something whereby members over a certain post count can upload direct to the site but I'd like to be prepared on any consequences to this.

My concern is about setting ourselves up for future problems with filling up whatever space we have.  I'm not actually sure how much space we have and whether this would never cause a problem or it eventually would.

I'd certainly put a file size cap on it but if we had say 50 people able to upload photos of max size 100Kb, would this quickly cause a problem or absolutely fine?   If it did start to cause space issues, what is the step up which works around that?

Many thanks,
Steve

You can select which groups can upload images from the admin area. If your groups are ladder groups then as your members post they would move up through the groups. This can be used to allow groups with a certain number of posts to be able to upload images.

You are also able to set the max upload space per user which by default is 10MB meaning that 50 users at a max of 10MB each they could not fill up more than 500MB of diskspace.

You will find that most people would not upload images. I had a quick look at a VW forum we host with 8,000 members who can all upload images and the upload folder is only using 480MB of space for members images.

Excellent, thanks Bruce.  Having a cap limit on what people can upload in total is cool.

Do you know what the space amount is available for images?

One other question whilst I'm on please.  How do I upgrade to v9.7 from v9.63 it's been so long since I did the upgrade, my memory is blank!

I've just taken a look and I don't think this will work as I envisaged it.

I thought there would be an upload cap value per group, rather than one value which counts across all groups.

The three staff have had permissions to upload images for nearly two years now so the current value is 100MB, this counts for three people.

I'd not want to drop this value for staff but nor would I want to grant that for everyone.

What I had wanted to do was say 10MB for members, 20MB for senior members with a higher post count and then 100MB for staff.

Hmmm, back to the drawing board me thinks!
