Hi.

First of all I would like to say that I am very impressed with Web Wiz forums.  The ease of setup and deployment was a nice bonus.  I can go on and on with the compliments, however... that is not why I am here.

My issue is with the set up of SMTP.

I have my own web server, and have set up the forum to reqire email conformation from users that register. This works fine for many of the members that have standard POP3 or SMTP mail accounts, but I am unable to email members using AOL. This means that they are not able to Confirm their reg,.

I am getting an error in my event log as follows:

Event ID: 4000
Description:
Message delivery to the remote domain 'aol.com' failed for the following reason: An SMTP protocol error occurred.

I know that aol used their own protocol and are so far unwilling to help me resolve this issue.

If AOL members can get mail from a HOTMAIL user, then I should be able to fire off an email to them from my server, Right???

I have been researching this for some time now on the net and have made posts in other forums with no success.

I am hoping that someone here has conquered this problem and will be willing to share the knowledge.

I have looked into the settings on the server, and attempted to set up a smart host  with no success.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreceated, even if it is just pointing me in the right direction.

I know that this is a bit off topic and that typicly server issues are not supported here. But I am hoping...

Thanks in advance.

Jay C

I find that AOL rejects allot of mail from scripts on web sites to prevent spam. Many of the free email accounts like Hotmail and Yahoo do the same.

There is little that can be done about this accept convince these companies to change their spam policies.

What I do is plave aol, yahoo, and hotmail, into the email domains that are not allowed so people can not sign up on this forum unless they use another email address.

This can be a pain to some users but I find that so far out of 5,000 people that have signed up I have only found a few people complain and even if they kick up a right fuss they always seem to find some email address from elsewhere to sign up with.

AOL users wouldn't be able to click on the link to activate their account anyway, as AOL email accounts don't support these types of links.

You would need to change the link in the activation email to be plain text and then include instructions for these AOL users to cut and paste the link into their web browser.
