My forum members have a heck of a time with reply/quoting. They clobber the [quote][/quote] tags all the time leaving posts with  [/quot or something like that in the message body. I am not sure why this happens, but I do know they really don't understand the markup/tags and how they work.

What would be nicer and cleaner would be if the message being quoted would not be added to the message  box like it is but rather seperated from it. If a bar was added just above the Message box and the FONT toolbar that said, 'click to edit original quoted messge' and it unfolded a quick edit box (sometimes the member only wants to quote a 'sentence') that would allow the member to remove any text they want - it would be a much nicer soution.. and the [quote][/quote] tags never appeared in the message box but were 'added' when the message was posted.. that would help a lot.. any thoughts on this?

Train 'em.
Many of us want to quote PART of a message or for other reasons, need to edit the quote, or, reply to a multi- sentence quote one line at a time, so need it in their reply box.
What they are doing is editing the quotes, and removing a bracket when deleting part of the quote.
Tell 'em to cut it out! Seriously, it's a training issue - they are deleting parts of a message in quotes and snagging the bracket at the same time as text editors tend to like to grab entire WORDS or strings at a time instead of allowing us to individually highlight ONLY what we want to grab. I see it as a shortcoming of the editor....... I hate it that I can't highlight a single letter in a word in wordpad or word, for example, instead it wants to grab the whole WORD for me. Same for URLs and file paths - it often grabs a space after the string.
Editors should not think for me and grab whole words, strings or sentences, and people need to be more careful when they edit quotes!
When I see that I go in and edit their message and straighten up the mess for them.
