Is there any particular reason why the usernames are limited to 15 characters or am I safe to increase that value?

I've sussed out how to do it and haven't spotted any problems while messing about with beta 3. Are there any problems associated with this that I haven't noticed yet?

Did anything ever come of this? i'm needing to do the same..  also i need to increase the length for the user's homepage field...  any suggestions?
