Hello Bruce,

I am using an old 8.XX version of WWF from 2006 and I am about to upgrade soon. I am using MSSQL 2005 and a foreign language (the forum is in the current version is already translated).

I wanted to know if it is possible to install the new version + upgrade the database plus also perhaps run the database optimisation tool, all to allow both versions to run at the same time until all upgrade works are finished.
I am mostly afraid of problems that might be caused due to the usage of different language, since all the translation is of course maintained in a file containing variables that comply with the version i am currently running.

What would you suggest me to do the best to save time and hassle?

I appreciate your time.

Regards,
Noy S.

Version 8 and 9 can run off the same database in the way you need. However, before you go live with version 9 you will need to run the resync tool in the admin area as some of the data such as last post, last member to post, etc. may not display correctly in version 9.

If you have also changed the page encoding in your present forum you will need to edit the includes/setup_options_inc.asp file in notepad to make the page encoding the same.

The new language files carry on from the old, so you will only need to add the new text to the end and translate the additions.

Hi Bruce,

Sorry to bring it up again but I've got another question:
Is it possible to do the database upgrade before I go live with version 9? It just says on the text file that comes with the database upgrade tool: 'Do NOT attempt to run Web Wiz Forums version 7 or 8 with a version 9 database or it WILL corrupt it --> so I'm confused...

Thanks in advance!

This is true of version 7, but with version 8 it will only put the last topic and last post details out of sync.

As long as you use the Resync Posts and Topics tool from the admin area in version 9 before you go live you should be OK as it will resync the data which goes out of sync from using a version 8 forum on a version 9 database.
