I recently switched servers and moved the forums/db (MSSQL). Everything seemed fine until I had several users emailing me telling me when they login they get the message, "There are no Forums to display" - and can't post or see anything. Even when they try to create new accounts, it still gives them problems?

Any ideas what's wrong here?

Thanks,
Quinn

You did not mention how you transferred the SQL Server data to the new server.

The transfer tools built into SQL Studio Manager will not work for transferring the database as they do not transfer the entire database schema.

What you need to do is have your old host create a backup of the database (a .bak file) which can then be used to recover the database on the new server.

Many hosts will give you online tools to do this, but if yours do not then you will need to contact them.

Hi, thanks for the response.

I updated and detached the MSSQL database from the old server and uploaded it (with the log) to the new server. They attached it (Enterprise manager) and I ran the mssql .asp file - I'm not sure why attaching a db wouldn't work in this case - going from MSSQL2000 to 2005?

It seems only new accounts and some old accounts are showing that there are "no forums" I thought it was a "cookie" problem, but it's far more serious. I don't have access to the old server - but I do have the data and log files. Will those work?

You say you ran the mssql .asp. Are you refering to the mssql setup file?

If so this is where you have gone wrong as this file should only ever be run on a new installation, otherwise it will create extra accounts and settings in the database which will mess it up, as is what has happened to your database.

Hopefully you made a backup of the detached database before you uploaded it to the new server as you will need to go back to that and restore it from that. This time DON'T run the mssql server setup file on it.
