If you use FrontPage, the file browser used for uploads or adding images will always show a _vti_cnf subdirectory. That's just for FrontPage's internal use, and will be confusing for users (particularly as it contains images with the same filenames as its parent directory, but of zero size).

Thanks Bruce. Uploads work fine so far, and we only ever publish using FPSE. As far as I can tell, FPSE automatically creates the necessary hidden directories when new users' uploads directories are created.

Conversely, there are plenty of people who find FPSE really useful. Keeping the permissions simple means you never need to touch them after creating a site. I've not had a single problem in over 10 years. Most of the bad reputation seems to have been caused by early versions, back in the last millennium. By 2002 the problems were sorted out, and indeed there hasn't needed to be a new major version since then.

Luckily, that's been my personal experience, too. FP did suck up until about 2002 or so. I find 2003 to be very stable and reliable. It's caused me no issues for several years. It even deals with styles and has better standards support.
I can understand Bruce's concerns, however, as well, I'm an IT person for the State of Iowa (USA) and FP extensions are a pain to deal with on the server side. From a user standpoint, I'd say, what's the big deal. Then I go to work and deal with them, and I can see both sides.
I've had great luck with FP on our 8.06 forums on our old/current host, no permissions issues, nothing wrong at all. HOWEVER, I now have a server setup at home, so will compromise......... I'm going to use FrontPage for my own server at home, make all my changes and tweaks there, then use FTP to copy the changes to the new host - yup, WebWiz hosting. So I have it both ways and Bruce and crew don't have to deal with FP extensions.
But since I started my own personal sites, and my wife's business site back in the late 90's, I've used FrontPage with little issue, and must say since 2003, literally no issues.
Then I go to work and see our own web servers and remind myself - there's another side to this all..................

I beleive that on the server these files are normally set with the hidden attribute so you don't see them. However, if you use an FTP to download and upload these directories they often loose the hidden attribute.
