Does version 7.5 of the Forums support CDO on Windows Server 2003?  Windows 2003 no longer comes with CDONTS.

Originally posted by Windows Server 2003 IIS Help File Windows Server 2003 IIS Help File wrote:

Collaboration Data Objects for Windows NT Server (CDONTS): CDONTS has been removed from the Windows Server 2003 family. If your Web applications use CDONTS, you can convert them to Microsoft Collaboration Data Objects (CDO). Most methods in CDONTS have matching methods in CDO, but might be named differently. For reference material for CDO in the Platform Software Developer Kit (PSDK), see Overview of CDO at MSDN Online.

We are moving to a new server AND upgrading to version 7.5 of the forums.  We were using forum version 7.01 on Windows 2000 with CDONTS currently, and need to get the e-mail notifications to work on the new server.

Thanks.

All version of Web Wiz Forums from 6.x have supported CDOSYS that is used on Win2k, WinXP, and Win 2003. (CDOSYS is the CDO email component)

Some versions of Windows 2003 do have CDONTS and if not CDONTS can be installed on the web server, many web hosts do support CDONTS under Windows 2003.

If you are usure how to install CDONTS on Win 2003 there are plenty of tutorials on this as WinXP doesn't ship with CDONTS and many people including myself have installed CDONTS on WinXP and Windows 2003.

Which would be better?  Installing CDONTS or using the CDOSYS?

EDIT:

Also, are you saying that CDOSYS is the same thing as CDO?  They just decided to call it CDO instead of CDOSYS in Windows 2003?

CDOSYS is the name of the CDO component you call for emailing in ASP.

CDONTS is a bit buggy in formatting emails but as it uses the local SMTP server instead of giving the SMTP server with CDOSYS it means that if the SMTP server goes down you don't get errors.

I decided to go with CDOSYS since it was already installed.

I forgot that I had to specify a smtp server and surprisingly it gave no errors when I sent an e-mail from the forum!!!

The only reason why I figured out e-mail wasn't going out was I was no longer receiving any e-mail from the forum (i.e. topic subscriptions).  The forum "pretended" to send the e-mail even though it wasn't.  Luckily I was extensively testing it after moving to the new server otherwise I might not have noticed for awhile.

Also, CDOSYS turned out to be better since we turned off the built-in SMTP server in IIS and went with a different mail server software on the same server (for the time being).  CDONTS and the other mail server can't run on the same server at the same time (port conflict).  But CDOSYS works just fine.

Thanks for answering my questions.
