In our case, stuff that's been hashed to death, or which have been long since forgotten about, but you want folks to still find and read/reference.

I experimented with the locking today, and actually have a reason today. I decide there were some threads that needed to remain intact for historical purposes. So the locking helped me out there.

Otherwise, I don't see how/why it's used.

On our forum, we lock topics if things get out of hand - ie, arguements etc, or if new users reserect extremely old topics.

Exactly. Those are good reasons for us, too.
Or, if the thread has degraded, but there is good technical info and we wish to keep the thread for reference. (we get a lot of historical and technical information on our forum, some of it quite rare)
