I currently support a forum for my sister using phpBB. The forum is constantly being hit by spammers and bots advertising drugs and porn. I was after some opinions on the benefits of transferring the forum to webwiz. Does anyone here have problems with spammers and bots? Should I make the change?

Thanks.

There are loads of things built into Web Wiz Forums to prevent Spammers and Bots.

First if you allow unregistered users to post you have CAPTCHA security images for unregistered users. This requires the user type in a security image bots can not read. This prevents bots from posting.

Other options to prevent spammers includes, full moderation, whereby posts are only displayed to the public when a modertor or admin approves the post. Nakes human spammers give up very quickly.

There is also an option for email activation of new members with IP and email domain banning, which can be used to reduce the number of unwanted spammer signups.

If you really need to go hardcore if you have really bad human spammers you can even go as far as having new signups activated by the admin once vetted.

If you did antecedently setup your forums insecurely there is also a configurable flood filter, which only allows so many posts per user in a certain time span to prevent your forum from being flooded with spam.

There are also other features available, but as long as you setup your forums correctly spammers should not be an issue.

Is there an easy way to migrate from phpBB to webwiz? My sister is dreading a possible re-birth of the forum and having to encourage users to build up the posts again....

There isn't because the database schemas would be completely different.

However, are looking at building a generic member import tool over the coming weeks to be able to import members from other databases.
