If the CAPTCHA is not working this suggests an issue with the server holding the ASP session. The other option, which does effect performance, is edit the file functions/functions_session_data.asp in notepad and follow the instructions in that file to enable the database to store the session data.

hmmmm.. Just on a whime I changed the setting from TRUE to FALSE and now the site is working perfectly! It's been set to TRUE for a very long time without problems. I wonder if there is some issue with the new version of SQL Server that’s now in use? No doubt that when they upgraded the server the captcha thingy stopped working. At least my site is up and running now and new users can join and I can admin the site.
Any thoughts of this recent discovery?
