Greetings...

I absolutely love the forum app, thank you..

Question, are there any suggestions as to how to optimize the software to
conserve bandwidth. I have maybe a dozen active members and have
noticed at much as 20mgs of transfer per day. This may not seem like
much to some but for someone on a fixed transfer amount per month
this could potentially be a problem for me.

Any suggestions would be helpful, since myself and my members really
want to use this as best as possible.

By the way if it helps I'm using the Access version of the software, I don't
have SQL Server available to me, though if there is support for MySQL I do
have access to MySQL.

Thanks in advance for you help..

The version you are using woun't effect your bandwidth.

Somethings that can help cut the bandwidth used include:-
  • Disable the use of Avatars
  • Disable the use of emoticons
  • Disable the use of signatures
  • Don't display to many topics or posts on each page
All of these options can be set from the 'froum configuration' page in the admin area.

Basically it's cut down the amount of graphics and HTML/data displayed on each page.

more topics per page will increase the loading time for each page and every page will get a bit bigger, but one post is smaller than one page, if you understand what I mean

I understand, you need to have an resonable average, to small and the user will need to go through multiple pages to see all the posts/topics, thus using more bandwidth, to high and more than enough post/topics are shown also increasing bandwidth.

I think the default amount that the forum is set to is around a good comprimise.

I did some analysis on my server. My forum on average is pushin about 8-9 gigs per month. I found the avatars and emoticons were taking minimal bandwidth (mainly due to caching). By changing page size from 30 per page down to 15 it cut down on about 2 gig per month (pages went from average 90k down to 55k).
