Hello firstly,

As a totally noobeee at this i think i firstly should explain whats happening, iv just added Web wiz forums to my site, and congrats it s smashing, everything was working fine for a few days, then i went to change the banner picture and all hell has broke loose, i dont know if its something i have done or its a general error....

Everytime now i try to goto the forum i get the error page saying:

Server Error in Forum Application
An error has occured while writing to the database.
Please contact the forum administrator.

Support Error Code:- err_Access_getUserData()_update_last_visit
File Name:- functions_login.asp

Error details:-
Microsoft JET Database Engine
Operation must use an updateable query.

Could someone please tell me how to sort this out.  and another subject, if i reload the forum in FTP to the root will it scrub everything?

Sorry if i got any terms wrong, i am still learning it all!!

Bazza Confused

Update: i refreshed my cookies, as i was told that that may be the problem (wouldnt explain anybody elses problem with getting in)  but now i can see the default page, when i go to login i get this message:

Server Error in Forum Application
An error has occured while writing to the database.
Please contact the forum administrator.

Support Error Code:- err_Access_loginUser()_update_USR_Code
File Name:- functions_login.asp

Error details:-
Microsoft JET Database Engine
Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.

Pretty much the same as the last one but i thought you should know.

The error means that you do not have correct permissions on the server to write to the Access database.

Contact your web host and get them to set the correct permissions for you.

Ok.... contacted fasthosts and they have said that on the windows server they cannot allow permissions, i just find it wierd that the forum was working fine for a few days then went kapppput!

I have contacted fasthosts again to ask about why it has changed, does anybody else know if windows server cant be set to gain permissions, it sounds far fethced to me, im on the fasthost medium services. with ASP enabled.

I take it if they are correct i wont be able to use web wiz forums!
Thants not so good.

Fasthosts says it all, I used Fasthosts years ago and always found them to find that their support sucked, moving away from them was the best thing I ever did.

Permissions can be changed on Windows web servers, it needs to be done by the server admin rather than through FTP like on a Linux system.

Usually Fasthosts have write permissions already enabled across all their Windows web servers by default.

You might want to try right clicking on your Access database and check that the read-only attribute is not checked before uploading it to Fasthosts, if that fails then you need to get back onto Fasthosts and demand that they check the permissions system on your site.

Failing that checkout our web hosting at www.webwiz.net, you can have the Web Wiz Forums pre-installed for you on your account, by myself, and as I also write the software there won't be any problems with getting it setup correctly.

Thanks for the advice borg..
I have recieved another email from fasthosts saying I can add the programme to my private directory, is this advised?... i have asked them to make sure i can get said permissions when this happens, i really am a noobeeee tho and want to make sure everything will go correctly before i do and amendments!!

Thanks for the advice on checking out your hosting aswell, but as yet i have had no major issues with fasthosts apart from this!....

Thanks,

The Access database should be placed in the private directory anyway, you then need to edit the database connection file with the path.

How to do this in a step-by-step guide is in the install instructions:-
