If you go to the Forum Membership list the forum admin will be in the 'Admin Group' if you look in the Group column

I remember that part...but the area im having difficulty in is actually getting to the admin portion -- i might have deleted the user from the database and need a way to recode the admin user in the db

The built in Forum Admin account can only be deleted by directly deleting it in the database which you should NEVER do as it will mean your forum may not function correctly.

If you open the database the admin account with be in the table tblAuthor with the Author_ID of 1

ok, i reformatted the database and allowed author_id (which WAS deleted) to reflect our "new" administator -- once i log in tho, i click the admin button at the top of the page and i come to an error which says "Sorry, only members with sufficient permission can access this page."...where do i go from here?

This is a bot hard to say as you are using an older version which is no-longer supported.

The best advice would be to upgrade to the latest version and see if you still have the problem then.
