Hii All;

I am using WWF with Access DB. I think migrate to SQL. But I ask a question. Our forum created 1 years ago. And our DB 11MB.
  1. How much increase performance Access to SQL ? (approximate percent %)
  2. Max and optimal sizes for Access DB ?
  3. Max and optimal sizes for SQL ?
  4. How much your DB size ? (define DB type (SQL or Access))

Thanks

Access is a flat file database system and as such is very poor at performance as each time the database is accessed the entire database needs to be loaded into the web servers memory.

SQL Server is a database server and as such you usually have SQL Server on it's own dedicated server so it doesn't effect the web servers performance. Also it doesn't use a flat file so doesn't require the entire database loaded into memory.

Access is fine for very small projects but as a flat file suffers from lots of draw backs, including, size limit, connection limits (usually a pool of 20 per server with all sites sharing this pool!!), often becomes corrupted, etc, etc.

SQL Server on the other hand, doesn't have any of these limitations, it's much more robust, doesn't have size or connection limits and is a much better database system.

A bank may use a farm of MS SQL Servers to store all it's bank records on, but you wouldn't even dream of placing this data in an Access database, even if it where possible.

Basically Access is a cheap desktop flat file database system for home use, and MS SQL Server is a $19,000 professional Relational Database Management System used by the big boys.

1. We did a test run and performance was increased by approximately 70%. But it depends very much on your server.

2. AFAIK the max. size for Access DBs is 1GB, the optimal size is always the smallest. Wink
Also it depends very much on your server how big an Access database can grow without performance issues.

4. 140 MB, Access

The very very large company that I work in uses Access to do its wage /overtime payments.  Its got 8 databases about 120mb each and its always becoming corrupted.  Theyre just too tight to upgrade it to SQL.  Access, in the words of Microsoft, "should not be used in a corporate environment or where stability is paramount"

Dont forget that you can get a free copy of MS SQL in its MSDE version.  Its a cut down version of the full SQL2000 but doesnt come with the Enterprise Manager (but you can get free tools that do the same) and has a concurrent connection limit.  I run my forum development on MSDE on my XP laptop, works fantasic!

Hi Again;

Why ask these questions ?

Because my friend complaint our forum very slow. He member of 10-15 forums. And he like only this forum forum.donanimhaber.com web forum. This forum very fast and use SQL and I think this site located dedicated server. My friend said "Cause Of this, forum script. You use webwiz and donanimhaber use aspplayground". I said that to him "Cause Of this, SQL and hosting. Script effect %10 approx."

I examine aspplayground and I dont like. Because it has got PoorTextEditor (PTE) LOL. And admin screen very bad. For this reasons I like WWF. I dont believe this cause script. SQL and hosting much than script.

But aspplayground have got auto-thumbnail attachements. But this and more features are payable. WWF is free. And I integrate our portal with forum (www.knowhow.gen.tr). When I leave WWF this is very big problem for me. I dont want to leave WWF. I suggest many thing for V8. Auto thumbnail big images very useful feature. And Borg said that (Performance Performance Performance...LOL for v8). I m waiting V8 and I talk my hosting sponsor for SQL. Then I try migrate to SQL. This is not effect my site integration isnt it?

@Borg : For V8, SQL and access versions improved performance isnt it ? not only one both versions improved versions isnt it (according to v7.x)? And I can migrate to v7.7 to v8 access or SQL version isnt it? I think modify DB.

Thanks.

These questions have been asked/answered a zillion times.LOL

Like everyone has stated MS SQL Server is the way to go for the best performance. However, I'd like to share some stats (again) for one of my forums which is a credit to WWG. Please note that I have purged this database at least 3 times for old members and posts. It has peaked at 180 users showing active and maintained 120 active users for over 5 hours before.

Running Access at ~14MB
