tracing IP from a members registration

Is there a way to track/trace the IP address of a user who has registered on my forum but not made any posts

Would there be any log of the computer/connection used when a person registered an account
 
This is fairly important as my site has had past attacks where the police have been brought in to take statements, obviously I can't prove much with just an IP but want to see what it brings back

the ip is not captured when registereing but you could add it

check the MOD's forum it may already exist

there are lots of mods within that forum
